Renowned for its simplicity and full-bodied flavor, the French press method is a favorite among coffee enthusiasts worldwide. Join us as we walk you through the steps to master this classic brewing technique and unlock the rich, aromatic flavors of freshly brewed coffee.

What You’ll Need:

  • French press
  • Freshly roasted coffee beans
  • Burr grinder
  • Kettle
  • Timer
  • Spoon
  • Scale (optional but recommended for precision)

Step 1: Grind Your Coffee Beans

Start by grinding your coffee beans to a coarse consistency. For French press brewing, a coarse grind is essential to prevent over-extraction and achieve optimal flavor extraction. Aim for a consistency similar to breadcrumbs or coarse sea salt.

Step 2: Preheat Your French Press

Before brewing, preheat your French press by rinsing it with hot water. This step helps maintain the temperature of your coffee throughout the brewing process, ensuring a consistently delicious cup.

Step 3: Add Coffee Grounds

Measure out your freshly ground coffee into the preheated French press. As a rule of thumb, use a ratio of 1:15 or 1:16 coffee to water for French press brewing. For example, if you’re using 30 (1.058 oz,) grams of coffee, you’ll need approximately 450-480(15,873 oz-16.932 oz,) grams of water.

Step 4: Bloom the Coffee

Pour a small amount of hot water (about twice the weight of your coffee grounds) over the grounds to saturate them evenly. Allow the coffee to bloom for 30 seconds, releasing trapped gases and preparing the grounds for optimal extraction.

Step 5: Add Water and Stir

Slowly pour the remaining hot water over the coffee grounds, ensuring they are fully submerged. Use a spoon to gently stir the coffee-water mixture to ensure even saturation and extraction.

Step 6: Steep

Place the lid on your French press with the plunger pulled all the way up to trap heat during the steeping process. Set your timer for 4 minutes and allow the coffee to steep.

Step 7: Plunge and Pour

After 4 minutes, slowly press down the plunger of your French press, exerting steady pressure to separate the coffee grounds from the brewed coffee. Once the plunger reaches the bottom, your coffee is ready to pour.

Step 8: Enjoy Your Brew

Pour the freshly brewed coffee into your favorite mug and savor the rich, full-bodied flavor of French press coffee. Feel free to experiment with different coffee beans, grind sizes, and brewing ratios to find your perfect cup.
